Perth is not just a beautiful city, it’s also home to some pretty amazing, albeit expensive food. Our three days in Perth were largely focussed around my favourite thing to do – eat. Luckily my friends all share my love of food (one of the reasons we’re friends I guess!) and our hosts were excited to show off all their local favourites.
They also believe in breakfast dessert. Oh how I love breakfast dessert. We shared this soft, butter slice of pear cake after our first breakfast at a local cafe.
A trip to Perth isn’t complete without dining by one of their famous beaches and a favourite hotspot is Clancy’s.
The decor was so bright and cheery you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a beach-side shack somewhere in Jamaica. I was seriously taken by this rainbow love seat. Sadly it was a bit too big to smuggle home across the country.
I didn’t photograph all the food we consumed. For one, that would be a very very very long post and two, I was on holidays. I did catch a pic of our starters – pork belly and stuffed, fried jalapeños.
I was assured that these weren’t too hot but my goodness, they were hot stuff. I think I downed at least a liter of water in an effort to sooth the fire in my mouth but as we all know, water only makes it worse. Where’s a big glass of milk when you need it?!
Checking out local markets is a must do on my travel itineraries and Kate was eager to show us here Saturday morning Subi farmers markets. Run in the local primary school, the markets had all sorts of goodies from paella to rainbow carrots and mushroom-growing kits to sand painting.
If you’re not familiar with sand painting – kids pick a picture that’s divided into lots of different segments. You peel off a segment at a time to reveal a sticky section and then you cover it with whichever colour of sand you like then move on to the next section. They end up with a gorgeous little rainbow painting. Yes I seriously wanted to do one myself and if it wouldn’t have been totally socially unacceptable I just might have.
Possibly my favourite part of the markets was our take-home morning tea. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this was one of the best cupcakes I’ve ever eaten. It was as light as a cloud and not a little bit dry. I did have to remove a little of the icing though. It was just a little too sweet for me.
A trip the the Little Creatures brewery is also a must on a trip to Perth. The restaurant is set up in a huge warehouse overlooking the marina. You can take a seat inside, out the front overlooking the water, in the back courtyard or upstairs, also overlooking the marina. With six of us and a double pram it was a bit tricky to find a spot but I nabbed us one upstairs.
I thought the waiter was joking when his response to my question (although more a statement) ‘can I join these two tables?’ was ‘no sorry we’re not allowed.’ After speaking to his manager we were given permission and I called the rest of the group up to our posse then ventured off to take a few photos.
I thought that making 6 pizzas by hand one night over Christmas was a big deal but check out the production line the guy up the top had going. Those bags in the photo above are loaded with potatoes. Wouldn’t you love to have one of them to play with?
Lunch was like a classier version of your typical pub grub and oh so tasty. I opted for the pizza and we all shared the house-cut chips. I can’t tell you the specifics (because I can’t remember) but it was good pizza and what’s not to love about house-cut chips?
I’m a little bit out of order here but to be honest it’s one big delicious food blur. Il Lido is a cute Italian restaurant by Cottesloe Beach that’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The tables are all long communal table and groups are divided from other diners by little vases of fresh flowers. Yes mine was the mushrooms. I can’t go past mushrooms.
The second market we visited was a little bit more upmarket. The Boatshed Market is for those on a Perth mining salary. It would be hard to walk out of the air-conditioned ‘shed’ with groceries for a few days with change for $100 but give me a green note and I’d quite easily spend it.
It was a lazy girl’s dream in the pre-chopped vege department. They had everything you needed to make any meal you can think of in no time at all. In fact I bet I could give Jamie Oliver a run for his money here.
My favourite were the stuffed mushrooms. Oh how I’d love to throw them on my barbeque
I wouldn’t have minded a brownie or two either but after the weekend full of eating I resisted. Everything was so beautifully presented though, it was hard to stop myself. The market had everything from fancy cheeses, to imported corn chips, gourmet free-range marinated meat to freshly-squeezed oranges and pre-prepared salads. If I earned the big bucks, it’s where I would shop.
After a weekend of dining like royalty, it was a rude shock receiving our airplane meal on the way home let me tell you.
