I had more trick-or-treaters last night than I could have imagined. They were absolutely adorable, except maybe for the group of 20 who all came at once and took handfuls of lollies and only one of them said thank you. They started at 4.30 and we had our last visitor about 6.15. I saw a lot of witches, zombies, a few draculas, princesses and a footy player to name a few and one family even turned up with mum, dad, the kids and the three dogs all dressed up (if I could award a prize they’d get it).

By far the most adorable were the three 2 year old boys decked out in full costume. Just seeing them teeter up the stairs holding their candy buckets melted my heart but when they said ‘trick-or-treat’ I was almost like Rachel in the Halloween episode of friends where she gives all her candy to the pretty princess. I can’t think of a decent segue into my little mini-break last week so I’ll be completely random and jump right in…

Last week I had a whirlwind trip to visit my friend Miss Victoria at her new home in Port Fairy. If you’re like me and have no idea where that is, it’s about 3 hours south west of Melbourne right on the coast in a beautiful part of Australia. There was a bit of planning that went into getting me there. Yes I’m a wimp but I thought that a 2.5 hour plane ride plus a 4+ hour train ride would be a bit too much for me to do on my own in my state.

As luck would have it, Miss Victoria went to the Beyonce concert in Melbourne on the Tuesday night, I flew in early Wednesday, we drove down to Port Fairy together, had two nights there and then she had to go back to Melbourne to fly out for the weekend on Friday morning so I hitched a ride again.

I had a wonderful time seeing where she lives and checking out a beautiful part of the country. I think I said the word ‘cute’ at least 100 times. I couldn’t help it, everything is just so cute.

It’s a funny contrast that you’ll be walking through the streets of quaint little cottages with lavender growing everywhere and two minutes later you can be at the beach. Port Fairy used to be a whaling village and still has quite a few of the original whaling houses. They’re adorable.

We managed to squeeze quite a bit into the time I was there and of course I asked if she could take me to one of her antique shops. They have the most amazing stuff down there, so much better than in Brisbane. How’s this for a Tupperware selection? I bought a vintage egg beater which I’ve been keeping my eye out for for years.

There was even a gorgeous little cottage just for me. Isn’t the lavender amazing? It smelled so wonderful everywhere.

I was warmly welcomed to their beautiful new guest room. Their house was just built recently but Miss Victoria had been planning the decorating and furnishing for months and despite moving in just a month or two ago, it looks like they’ve been settled for years. All the artwork above was made by my very clever friend.

She has an incredible eye for decorating with vintage finds. What she can make look fabulous I would make look like second hand junk. Don’t you love the embroidery hoop wall? I’m thinking of something similar in my office (maybe, if I get around to it).

This setting made me think it was part of a movie set. Isn’t it picture prefect? Don’t be deceived by the blue sky though. It was about 10C and the windchill made it even colder.

If you’re looking for a place to relax and escape the world for a few days then visit Port Fairy. The people are lovely, the scenery gorgeous and the food rather delicious. Of course I’ll be dedicating a whole post to the food.

Thanks for having me Miss Victoria!
